VERTIVER GRASS PLANTATION
A Natural Tool for sustainable Water Resource and Soil
Since 2019, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has supported vetiver grass planting:
-
120 rai
Vetiver roots hold on to flowing water, thus reducing its surface runoff and helping water to percolate in the ground. Vetiver Grass is a bunch of grass that can grow up to 5 feet tall. Leaves are long and linear with sharp margins. Vetiver plant has a finely structured and powerful rooting system which grows downwards in soil up to 13 feet deep. It can protect the soil and water from erosion therefore it is planted at the edge of farmlands, riverbanks, and small ponds.
CHECK DAM BUILDING PROJECT
A construction that obstructs a waterway to reduce waterflow velocity allowing sediment to settle out.
Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has built a total of over 5,500 check dams and more than 600 household beneficiaries.
A check dam is a structure built to block the path of water and normally obstructs small brooks in areas of headwater of sloping hand. Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has supported a local NGO and communities in building check dams in the watershed areas of the Mae Suk River in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province. Check dam is significant to ecosystem of the forest which helps slow the water flow and help conserving a higher hydration level and when a forest area is well hydrated, the chance of forest fires being occurred will decrease.
