Watershed Preservation

Target Area

Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province is one of the most important watershed and agricultural areas of Thailand. There are 25 small rivers in watershed forests that form the Mae Chaem River where 40% of the water flows to Ping River and the water then goes to Chao Praya River.

VERTIVER GRASS PLANTATION

From 2019, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has supported vetiver grass planting of over 120 rai.

Vetiver grass can improve the quality of soil and water because it normally grows in a bunch and has very long roots. It can grow well both in acid and base conditions and has powerful rooting systems which grow downwards in the soil up to a depth of 3 meters. It also protects the soil and water from erosion and improves the ecosystem.

CHECK DAM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

From 2019, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has built a total of over 1,664 check dams.

A check dam is a construction that obstructs a waterway of small rivers and helps plants to grow along the riverbank. It also helps slow down any heavy water flow and allow sediment to settle out. This is a sustainable way to conserve soil and water.

CLEAN WATER SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNITY

From 2019, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand has been providing over 32 clean water supply systems and water filtration systems for communities and schools in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Rayong, and Saraburi.

Clean water is an essential factor for both using and consuming and is also a fundamental right for everyone to have access to. However, most of hill tribe people still face difficulties in finding clean water for consumption.
